简介: 满族少女叶赫那拉·玉兰聪慧志高，不甘于贫穷和男尊女卑的处境。道光帝六皇子奕訢南下视察民情，邂逅玉兰于雪地之中，互生情愫。奕訢又与汉人李乐天结为莫逆之交，李乐天亦钟情玉兰。道光急召奕訢返京，奕訢不及向玉兰道别而使二人间产生种种误会，玉兰决定入宫选秀女。奕訢在皇位争夺中落败，四皇子即位为咸丰帝，奕訢则封为恭亲王，并遭咸丰猜忌和权臣肃顺排挤。玉兰入宫受宠，诞下皇子，晋封懿贵妃，逐步展露政治才能和权力野心。咸丰驾崩，留密诏给皇后并命肃顺辅政，防止懿贵妃夺权。同治登位，咸丰后与懿贵妃封为东宫太后慈安与西宫太后慈禧。慈禧得到恭亲王和李乐天帮助，从肃顺手中夺回政权，展开垂帘听政，诛杀异己并骗慈安烧毁咸丰密诏。恭亲王对慈禧所为颇心寒，决定辞官回乡，慈禧得到权力却失去友情和爱情。
