简介: 民国4年，袁世凯意图称帝，政局动荡是年秋，吴淞镇大火，灾民数以万计，本就鱼龙混杂的吴淞镇显得更为动荡不安。因地方善款筹集，吴淞镇重修民居，却在某宅架梁时出现意外，其间曝出一具男尸，其状诡异，引得镇上流言纷起，镇民惶恐，募资请僧道作法驱邪超度,其间亦有江湖术士混事，搅得镇上一派乌烟瘴气。镇保卫团长陆悦戎行伍出身，最是不信神鬼之说，见此情形不由大怒，一面下令驱散僧道术士，一面着人找来镇上义庄仵工吴云根、凌归元师徒，命其验尸查明死因，以正视听。镇上落魄乡绅少爷石乐志少年游历颇广，得知此案后便颠颠地来了，又见陆香邑在场，欲有所表现，当下一味指点评说，言语间对吴云根、凌归元师徒颇为不屑。吴云根对此不以为意，自顾检视死者身上之绿芽，神情颇为震惊，继而借故推脱似有隐情，其间语焉不详。
