简介: 该剧讲述明世宗年间，吏部何尚书遭严嵩诬害满门抄斩，其子何文秀只身潜逃之夜潜入严嵩党羽王家后花园，幸遇府中千金王兰英护救，并在途中私结夫妻，同来故乡海宁投亲。未料堂叔发配充军，何文秀在投亲无门之际，暂以卖字画为生。豪门恶少张堂窥觎王兰英，就以朝廷逃犯胁逼何文秀休妻，却遭到严词拒绝。善良的丫鬟梅香私放王兰英逃出魔掌后，被张堂杀害并栽赃何文秀，何文秀蒙受奸杀张府婢女不白之冤被打入县衙死牢。
